Software and Applications Programmers’ work is focused on designing, developing, testing, maintaining and documenting program codes according to user requirements, as well as system and technical specifications.  They interpret specs and translate technical designs and flowcharts into codes that computers will follow.  They are responsible for building, maintaining and modifying the code for software applications, constructing technical specs from a business functional model, and testing and writing technical documentation. Computer Programmers use code libraries to simplify writing. They have expertise in programming languages such as C++ and Java, as well as in upgrading, expanding and debugging current program code to identify and correct errors. Their areas of specialisation may include communications programming (systems), database development, database programming (systems), network programming, software development, and software programming. Computer Programmers are sometimes called Applications Developer, ICT Developer, or ICT Programmer.

Computer Programmers are oftentimes confused with Software Engineers because they are both concerned with development work.  However, not all Programmers are Software Engineers. Nonetheless, Programmers are working closely with Software Engineers particularly during user needs identification and program designing phase of a development project.  

To become a Computer Programmer, a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, as well as on-the-job training or prior relevant work experience are required.  Master’s degree and/or research experience associated with information technology and programming are usually highly regarded. 

There are over a hundred thousand Software and Applications Programmers in the country today, and in the next 5 years, the numbers are projected to increase by 20,000 more.  Almost all of Software and Applications Programmers in the country are currently working full-time for 38 hours a week and have an average base salary of $60,287 per annum.  Local industry salary survey suggested that starting pay for this occupation is at $42,186 and depending on experience and skills set, base pay can be stretched up to around $100,00 per annum.  Majority of them are employed in New South Wales and in Victoria mainly within the Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; Financial and Insurance Services; and Public Administration and Safety industries.

 
Essentials:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in related field (e.g. Computer Science)
  • Proficiency in Java/Java EE, C, C++, C#, .NET, Javascript, among others
  • Minimum of 2 years' relevant experience within the last 5 years
  • Relevant vendor certification
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Outstanding analytical and presentation skills

Desirable:

  • Proficiency in VB.Net, ASP.NET Framework, SQL
  • Relevant Master's Degree
