Multimedia Specialists are skilled in creating digital animation, visual effects, audio-visuals, and graphic image files to produce data and content for multimedia presentations, websites, CD-ROM or DVD, motion pictures, information kiosks, electronic gaming, mobile phone resources, e-commerce and e-security solutions, entertainment and educational materials.  They develop multimedia programs by bringing together texts, drawings, photos, graphics, animation and sounds with the goal of informing, educating, persuading, entertaining their target audience-user, and/or simply promoting an idea, a product, or a brand.  Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, After Effects, Dreamweaver, Flash Player and 3D Flash Animator, Apple Final Cut Pro X and Avid audio production software are some of the computer-based design tools they are using to translate creative ideas into multiple media platforms.
 
Some Multimedia Specialists also go out of their way to meet with clients for their initial job briefing as their basis in defining the project details, setting realistic and acceptable targets and timelines.  On a daily basis, they work in collaboration with other creative specialists, including Writers, Animators, Artist, Film-Makers, Videographers, Programmers, Sound Engineers, and Producers.  An important part of their work also involves liaising closely with Account Managers and with the Technical Design team, and where necessary and appropriate, ensure clearance and copyright.  Oftentimes, part of the challenge of the work for Multimedia Specialists is juggling multiple projects for various clients simultaneously.
 
In Australia, a tertiary qualification in any of the following relevant courses is usually required for entry into the role of a Multimedia Specialist.  These may include Fine Arts or Visual Art, Graphics and Media Design, Multimedia/Interactive Technology/Design/Animation, Web Development, Software Development/Engineering, 3D Design.  At least 5 years of relevant experience, alongside Vendor Certification, are usually needed to build a career in this field.  The average pay for a Multimedia Specialist is AU$56,230 per year, with a base salary ranging from $51,064 to $73,407 per annum.
 
Multimedia Specialist is considered a relatively small occupation with less than 9,000 employees throughout the country.  They can be found mostly in the Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; Information Media and Telecommunications; and the Retail Trade industries.  Clients may come from large advertising agencies to engineering firms or even from small retailers and local companies.

 

Essentials: 
  • Relevant Bachelor’s Degree or higher
  • Minimum of 5 years experience within the last 5 years
  • Vendor Certification
  • Proficiency in MacOS or Windows, Adobe Create Suite, After Effects and Premiere, Illustrator,
  • Photoshop and InDesign
  • Creativity and excellent know-how and skills in technical design, layout and details
  • Ability to multitask and manage well time at work
  • Excellent English communication skills
  •  

Desirable:

  • Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3 (Word Press and Drupal)
  • Experience in Maya, Flash and Cinema 4D
