Tech roles dominate LinkedIn’s top five emerging jobs for 2018

TECH-heavy roles have dominated Australia’s emerging jobs for 2018.

LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network, analysed millions of user-input job titles from the last five years to find the jobs critical for Australian business.

The 2018 Emerging Jobs Report revealed that the top five most in-demand roles are customer success manager, data scientist, full stack engineer, cyber security expert and experience designer.

Peter Sparkes, senior director of Cyber Security Services at Symantec, which provides cybersecurity software and services, said with the volume of high-threat cyber security attacks growing year on year, it is no surprise that cyber security experts have been named one of the top emerging jobs in Australia this year.

“In fact, as an industry, with threats rising, we are facing a global shortage of cyber security experts and according to a study by Frost & Sullivan, the global cyber security workforce will be short by approximately 1.8 million people in the next five years,” Mr Sparkes said.

“For consumers sharing more personal data with businesses than ever before, and with growing expectations on businesses to protect these, the widening skills gap will become harder to ignore.”

Last year, Symantec’s annual “Internet Security Threat” report found that Australia ranked eighth in Asia Pacific and Japan for overall cyber security threats.

“Symantec has experienced a growing demand for cyber security talent each year, particularly for high-end skill sets such as forensics, risk experts and security analysts.”

Learning and talent solutions senior director Jason Laufer said the top five emerging jobs are all in extremely high demand.

“When talent is thin on the ground, the perfect candidate will be highly discerning, looking for the right culture fit and potentially robust remuneration,” Mr Laufer said.

“The key to finding the best people will be to focus on ensuring you have an authentic and strong employer brand and focus on candidates’ skills and traits over their previous job titles.”

Customer success jobs, which topped the list, had a 38 per cent growth year on year over the last 12 months.

The data also revealed the career paths most employees have taken in these jobs, as well as the skills most commonly associated with the new roles.

Soft skills emerged as one of the most important characteristics employers look for, according to the research.

Mr Laufer said with shortage of talent in these emerging jobs, organisations should also focus on hiring candidates with transferable skills from diverse industries.

He said that the long-term challenge for HR and talent acquisition teams is to identify candidates with agility, versatility and the capacity for retraining.

“This can be best achieved by hiring on skills and traits rather than previous job roles, as well as offering opportunities for potential and existing employees to learn

and train, on the job,” Mr Laufer said.
